  • What is Day Out With Thomas™? Day Out With Thomas™ is a family event that offers aspiring engineers and their families the unique opportunity to take a ride with the classic storybook engine, Thomas the Tank Engine™ at regional heritage railroads across the country.
  • Who is Thomas the Tank Engine? Since Thomas the Tank Engine left the depot more than 60 years ago, this Really Useful Engine and his Island of Sodor friends have chugged their way into the hearts of preschoolers and grownups worldwide. Based on The Railway Series of classic stories authored by a father who loved trains and wanted a shared experience with his son, Thomas & Friends™ is a rite of passage that inspires the imagination while teaching the life lessons of friendship, exploration and cooperation.
  • What are the appropriate ages for Day Out With Thomas? Day Out With Thomas is a family event that welcomes passengers of all ages.
  • Where is the event? Day Out With Thomas will be at the historic Tweetsie Railroad theme park in Blowing Rock, NC.
  • When is the event? Day Out With Thomas will be at Tweetsie Railroad for ten straight days, Friday, June 6th through Sunday, June 15th, 2014.
  • When do tickets go on sale? Tickets go on sale February 1, 2014. You can purchase a ticket for a particular date and train ride departure time.
  • How much are tickets? Tickets are $39 for adults and $26 for children ages 3 through 12; children 2 and under are admitted free and do not need a ticket.  There is no processing fee on Internet orders; there is a $2 per ticket processing fee on phone and mail orders.
  • Do I need to purchase tickets in advance? Due to the popularity of this event, we encourage advance ticket purchases for a selected day and train ride time. Many train rides sell out in advance, and tickets may not be available at the gate. Purchasing tickets in advance will assure you that you will be admitted to the park. When you purchase tickets, you will be asked to select a specific date and train departure time for your ride with Thomas the Tank Engine. During the Day Out With Thomas event, your tickets are valid only for that date and ride time.
  • Do I need to purchase General Admission tickets in addition to the Thomas tickets?  No; your Day Out With Thomas ticket includes your general admission to Tweetsie Railroad.
  • What is included in the ticket price? Your ticket for Day Out With Thomas includes:
    - One train ride with Thomas the Tank Engine
    - Thomas & Friends themed entertainment
    - Thomas & Friends Storytelling and Video Viewing, and an Imagination Station with Thomas & Friends coloring sheets, temporary tattoos, stamps, train tables and Mega Blox™!
    - All the amusement rides, live shows and attractions at Tweetsie Railroad
    - Meet Sir Topham Hatt, the Chairman of the Railway on the Island of Sodor
    - Enjoy plenty of opportunities to find great Thomas & Friends merchandise at the Thomas & Friends Gift Shop located in Tweetsie Junction
  • Who needs tickets? Tickets are required for guests ages three and up. Children ages two and under do not need a ticket of any kind.
  • How do I purchase tickets? Beginning February 1, 2014, visit our Tickets page where you can purchase tickets for a specific date and train ride time. Print at home tickets are now available. You can also purchase by calling our toll-free Ticket Order Line at 1-877-TWEETSIE (1-877-893-3874).
  • Will tickets be available the day of the event? Many of the Day Out With Thomas events at Tweetsie Railroad sell out well in advance, so there may not be any tickets available if you wait until the day of the event.
  • Are discount tickets available? There are no discount tickets available for Day Out With Thomas.
  • Is Day Out With Thomas included with a Tweetsie Railroad Golden Rail Season Pass? A Golden Rail Season Pass includes one ticket to the Day Out With Thomas event on the date and time of your choice (subject to availability).  Contact the Tweetsie Railroad Ticket Office to order your boarding ticket for the Thomas the Tank Engine train ride.
  • Can we take advantage of your "After 3 the next day is free" policy?  Most definitely ! When you purchase your ticket specify a train ride time on the first afternoon (3:30 pm or later) and you can come back the next day at no additional charge (just remember to keep your ticket stubs for entrance the second day). You cannot come in after 3 the day before your train ride.
  • How will I receive my tickets? Print at home tickets will be available beginning February 1, 2014 on our Tickets page, and can be printed immediately. If tickets are ordered online or by phone 10 days or more in advance of the event, guests will receive their tickets in the mail.  Guests that purchase tickets closer to the event date can pick up their tickets at the Tweetsie Railroad Ticket Office on the day of the event.
  • Are there any refunds? There will be no refunds or exchanges, however tickets not used during Tweetsie's Day Out With Thomas event are valid for any other day of the 2014 season, excluding the evening Ghost Train® Halloween Festival in October.
  • Will Thomas the Tank Engine be there? Thomas the Tank Engine has traveled all the way from the Island of Sodor and has arrived Right on Time to take a ride with you and your family.
  • Will Sir Topham Hatt be there? Yes, Sir Topham Hatt will take time away from his busy schedule as Controller of the Railway on the Island of Sodor to meet and take pictures with guests.
  • Day of Event Information

    Will the Tweetsie train be running? Thomas the Tank Engine will be pulling our train with the help of one of Tweetsie Railroad's historic steam locomotives.
  • Will there be a show with the train ride? There will be an action-packed Wild West show with the Thomas the Tank Engine ride, and these shows have no gunfire or violence.
  • What times do trains depart? Trains depart every half-hour 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.
  • When should we arrive for our train ride with Thomas? It is recommended that guests arrive at the event at least one hour before their scheduled departure.  There is plenty to see and do at Tweetsie Railroad while you wait for your scheduled train ride.
  • What if we miss our scheduled train departure time? The Tweetsie Railroad staff will make every effort to assist Guests who miss their scheduled train ride.
  • Is there assigned seating on the train? Tickets are assigned by date and time. There are five train cars, each one accommodates approximately 60 riders.  Guests must be together during boarding if they wish to sit together on the train.
  • How long is the train ride? The train ride goes on a three-mile loop through the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, and takes approximately 25 minutes.
  • Are you limited to just one train ride? Your ticket is valid for one train ride with Thomas the Tank Engine at the specified day and time. If there are seats available on other scheduled trains, you may be able to ride more than once.
  • How do I get to Tweetsie Railroad? Visit our Directions page for information on how to get to Tweetsie Railroad.
  • Is there parking available on site? There is plenty of free parking at Tweetsie Railroad.
  • Is there an additional cost for parking? There is no cost for parking during the Day Out With Thomas event.
  • What if there is inclement weather? Day Out With Thomas events take place rain or shine.  Even in inclement weather, there is plenty to see and do at Tweetsie.
  • Are cameras allowed? Absolutely! Guests are encouraged to capture their Day Out With Thomas memories for their photo album.
  • Will there be food available? There are food venues located throughout the park, offering everything from snacks to complete meals.
  • Are strollers permitted? Day Out With Thomas is a family event that welcomes guests of all ages. Strollers may not be taken on the train ride, but there are designated areas for “stroller parking” during the train ride. Strollers are available for rent at $8 per day.
  • Is the event handicap accessible? Nearly all the rides, shows and facilities at Tweetsie Railroad are handicap accessible, including the train ride.  Guests with disabilities should plan for the fact that the park is located on mountainous terrain.
  • Are pets allowed? Pets are allowed at Tweetsie Railroad and during the Day Out With Thomas event. No kennel facility is available, and pets are not allowed inside the buildings or on the rides.
  • Where can I get information on lodging in the area?
