Locomotive No. 12 is the last surviving narrow-gauge steam locomotive of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC), which ran train service from Johnson City, Tennessee to Boone, North Carolina from 1919 to 1940. When Tweetsie Railroad opened in 1957, this was its sole locomotive. Locomotive No. 12 was built in 1917, and is a part of the National Historic Register.
Tweetsie Railroad will commemorate its 60th anniversary in 2017. Only July 4, 1957, Tweetsie Railroad opened at her new location just a few miles away from the old East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC) station in Boone. People came from all over the South to take a one-mile trip to a picnic area and then back up to the station. In the following years, Tweetsie Railroad evolved from an excursion railroad into North Carolina's first theme park.
Courtesy of the red, white and blue, Tweetsie Railroad invites guests to North Carolina’s first theme park. This American icon, which opened July 4, 1957, will light up the Blue Ridge Mountain sky during its annual July 4th Fireworks Extravaganza. 2017 will feature the park’s largest-ever fireworks show.
With the park open until 9:00 p.m. on July 4, guests will enjoy entertainment and rides on Tweetsie Railroad’s famed steam locomotives into the early evening. At 9:30 p.m., more than 200 large-caliber pyrotechnic mortar shells will burst with brilliant colors and light up the High Country sky.
