Tweetsie Railroad’s One-of-a-Kind Ferris Wheel
Most people know February 14th as Valentine’s Day, but did you know it’s also National Ferris Wheel Day? This day honors George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., the engineer behind the first Ferris Wheel, which debuted at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. More than a century later, Ferris Wheels continue to be a staple of amusement parks and a symbol of nostalgia, adventure, and romance.
And here at Tweetsie Railroad, we’re home to one of the most unique Ferris Wheels you’ll find anywhere!
Love at First Spin: Ferris Wheels & Romance
Few amusement park rides capture the magic of a Ferris Wheel—the excitement of lifting off the ground, the breathtaking views, and that heart-fluttering moment when you reach the top. It’s no surprise that Ferris Wheels have been the backdrop for countless love stories, first dates, and unforgettable family moments.
Have you ever taken a ride on Tweetsie Railroad’s Ferris Wheel? Maybe you held hands at the top, snapped a perfect picture, or just laughed your way through the ride. We’d love to hear your story! Share your favorite Ferris Wheel memory and tag us in your photos.
A Ride Through Time: The History of Tweetsie’s Ferris Wheel
Before becoming a staple at Tweetsie Railroad, this Ferris Wheel first delighted guests at Skyland Amusement Park. Built in 1955 by the Eli Bridge Company, it was relocated to Tweetsie in 1957, where it has been thrilling riders ever since.
Unlike modern rim-driven Ferris Wheels, this one is cable-driven, meaning a steel cable wraps around the outside of the wheel to keep it moving. This unique design, combined with a clutch system, means the ride relies on careful weight distribution to operate smoothly. Some say it’s the fastest Ferris Wheel on the East Coast!
Eli Bridge no longer manufactures cable-driven Ferris Wheels, making ours a rare piece of amusement park history. When you take a ride, you’re experiencing a classic attraction that’s becoming increasingly hard to find!
