Tweetsie Railroad host a once-a-year event Celebrating Railroad History and Heritage August 29–30
BLOWING ROCK, N.C. (August 18, 2026) — As the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of American independence, Tweetsie Railroad will celebrate an important chapter of American railroad history during its annual Railroad Heritage Weekend, August 29–30, 2026.
For the special weekend, Tweetsie Railroad’s historic steam Locomotive No. 190 will be temporarily themed to reflect its appearance during its years in Alaska during World War II, including the return of “USA” lettering to its tender.
Built in 1943 and later known as the White Pass & Yukon “Yukon Queen,” Locomotive No. 190 will operate throughout Railroad Heritage Weekend, giving guests a rare opportunity to see and ride behind the locomotive in its special historic presentation.
“Railroad Heritage Weekend gives us an opportunity each year to share more of the history behind the locomotives and equipment that have been preserved here at Tweetsie Railroad,” said Chris Robbins, President of Tweetsie Railroad. “This year, with the country celebrating its 250th anniversary, presenting No. 190 as it appeared during its World War II years in Alaska adds another meaningful connection to American history.”
Held once each year, Railroad Heritage Weekend offers guests experiences beyond a typical day at the park. Activities throughout the weekend include scheduled tours of the Locomotive Shop, historic railroad exhibits, opportunities to climb aboard Tweetsie Railroad’s 1870s vintage Coach No. 5, and historical presentations about the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad and Tweetsie Railroad.
Historian Johnny Graybeal will present “The Journey Home: Locomotive No. 12 from Homecoming Day to Tweetsie Railroad” on both Saturday and Sunday.
The weekend also provides an opportunity to share the latest progress on the comprehensive restoration of Tweetsie Railroad’s original steam locomotive, No. 12, built in 1917.
“Work continues on Locomotive No. 12,” Robbins said. “Some parts of the project, including the fabrication of the new firebox, are being carried out by specialists outside Tweetsie Railroad. The firebox is a core component and the main focus of the rebuild, and it is being fabricated and shaped in sections. Once completed, the firebox sections will be welded together inside the boiler. Then the process of installing more than 800 staybolts can begin, which will also take quite some time.”
“The No. 12 locomotive has not seen this level of disassembly since its construction in 1917,” Robbins said. “This comprehensive restoration project presents an opportunity to install many new components, including boiler tubes, springs and steam piping, as well as a rebuilt cab. We will continue to provide updates as this complex process proceeds.”
On Saturday, August 29, during the Evening Photo Special, guests will have the opportunity to photograph special run-bys at the Trestle and Frontier Outpost, locations that are not available during regular daytime operations. Participants must have a daily admission ticket and be at least 16 years old to leave the train at the designated photo locations.
